Brad and Jen. Boo Fu*king Hoo.

I just checked cnn.com and guess what one of their headlines is -- "Jennifer Anniston files for divorce from Brad Pitt." Jeez, I'm really glad that CNN is keeping us abreast of important events that we, the public, should be informed of.

Really, does anybody really give a crap that Jennifer Anniston and Brad Pitt are getting divorced? How will any of our lives be affected by their split? Well, maybe their breakup is more important than "typical" stories involving genocide, national and international security, economic and political upheaval around the globe. Those "boring" stories only leave us better informed about the world around us. Thank God for CNN. Where would we be without them?

Finally... someone else who is as cynical about the whole "celebrity break up" thing as front page news...
Sure, I like gossip, we all do, but when it pushes other more relevant and "newsworthy" news off the front page it falls to a level way below the "high maturity image" the media likes to think they present to an audience they perceive as "stupid".

fj: Don't you wish news organizations would try to gather audiences through actual reporting rather than their typical boilerplate nonsense?

Too right.
I think alot of the problem with the news networks and the media is that they're too fond of assuming that their total audience wants to see the same things over and over.
I realise there has to be a balance as far as reporting goes, but I think it would be far better if the "celebrity gossip" was kept to a minimum in the "mainstream" media and kept for the pages of the scandal rags and the entertainment shows.
It has no place on the front page of a newspaper, or the first story on the television news unless it is something that is genuinely in the public interest.
(Such as the OJ Simpson case, the Robert Blake case, the Michael Jackson case)
But... even then it tends to develop into hyperbole.
