IRA Be Gone.

I'm relieved to see that our government is no longer pandering to Gerry Adams and Sinn Fein, the political wing of the IRA. After the brutal murder of an Irish man and a 50 million dollar bank heist, it looks like the world has finally had enough of the Irish Republican Army. How is it that the IRA, which openly used terrorist acts to promote their cause, has survived this long?

I think a large part of the US population romanticizes their Irish roots. That was a way to excuse the terrorism of the IRA. "Oh it's good old Irish lads fighting for their freedom to worship" I think the means were being overlooked to a certain extent.

LJ: Take a look at Democratic Peace Theory by Maoz and Russett. The idea is that nations tend look the other way when cultures similar to their own "misbehave." Did we tolerate the IRA simply because of our nation's Irish roots or was there more to it?

There may be some truth to that. But, in college I once read an essay that compared the New Deal with National Socialism. Eugenics was somewhat of a force in pre-war U.S. society as was anti-semitism.

LJ: Can you elaborate? I'm not sure where you're going with this... thanks.

Pre-war Germany and the U.S. had many similarities. Is this a reach?

LJ: What's the connection with tolerance of the IRA?
