Girls Gone Mathematical.

I went to see Sin City yesterday. A friend pointed out a billboard advertising the latest Disney feel good extravaganza. It's a movie called Ice Princess. The target group for this film is comprised of young impressionable teenage girls. I was appalled when I read the slogan for the movie: "From small town Mathlete to big time Athlete."

Like it isn't good or glamorous enough for a girl to be a wiz at math and science. The billboard implies that this girl should throw all of this away to become an ice skater. That's what's glamorized. Why can't we encourage young women towards scholarly pursuits? How about a feel good movie about an athletic girl that thinks she's no good at math? She works hard and realizes that she has the ability and intelligence to become a great "mathlete."

Nah, that'd be too uplifting... too inspiring...

well, in my opinion, the media tends to portray academicians as geeks and dancing as more glamorous and desirable. but i do agree...such ads can be misleading...

Thanks for visiting my blog. I totally agree with you on this one - I have a 12 yr old sister who watches the Disney channel a lot & it irks me how all the movies are about girls becoming actors, athletes & pop stars. I wish Hollywood would make a teenage version of Good Will Hunting to inspire the teens!

Didn't you see A Beautiful Mind? Math will make you crazy. Let's point our kids and our relatives' kids in the math direction while encouraging Hollywood to focus on making our pants feel tight - but not with Ice Princess, that would be too creepy. Ice Skating is COOL.

I totally agree with Vavoom. The first thing that came into my head when I saw the math wiz to ice skater was what is wrong with just being a math wiz. Maybe the hot guy does not like her and she has to seek another way to impress him. We do not want our men to be afraid that their girl friends are smarter than they are.
