The Socialites.

It's never ceased to amaze me, politics. They were present at Berkeley. They're present here at Fancypants University. It's absolutely incredible the level of commitment I've seen people make to politics. Nearly all of the scientists I interact with are more focused on social climbing than they are on science.

I've argued time and again that science is in deep doo doo. Pardon the venom that cometh. I'm frustrated.

There exists members of my current group that are some of the worst scientists I've ever met. Honestly, I've tried hard to find scientifically redeeming qualities in each person. They just don't have "it." I've found that politics and social climbing are inversely related to scientific prowess. Of course that's a qualitative observation.

The aforementioned group members are vicious. They'll back stab, lie, cheat and steal to make it to the top. Of course, when someone "important" is around, they'll strap on their gear and start climbing the wall of social status. They don't really care about science. No, they're here to build upon their already inflated egos.

I'm sure this exists in every field. How do you folks cope with such nonsense?

I don't and don't very well either. It's limited me in where I will go in life, but the peace I have knowing I am doing these things because I love the job and I'm not trying to get ahead of someone is priceless. I'll probably never have a leadership position because I'm honest. But I would rather be honest than be in the socio-political mess I see around me.

Exactly what jef said. I had to play that game for awhile and it came down to the fact that I just couldn't lie to others and myself anymore. I stepped down and had a lower paying and lower standing job. But I eventually quit that company and finally have a job in the field that I was trained for and I love it. And there would be no way I ever went back to that type of job. There are a few people like that that I work with but I don't get invloved in their escapades. They have other agendas that don't agree with mine.

I became one of them. And, I hated it, but I had to survive.

It took me tewnty-three years to escape, and I now greet every day with joy knowing I don't have to play the game any more.

Yes, this stuff is very annoying. Humans will be humans. The way I deal is I simply notice what is happening, but kinda laugh at it and not take it too seriously. I know this is hard, but in the end, I think the good ones finish on top.

I got tired of spammers after a while too. I was going to suggest you activate the word verification requirement for comments, but I see you've already beaten me to the punch.

In regards to your post, the easy thing would be to say not to associate with them, but it's hard because you have to work with certain people whether you want to or not. As for coping, since there's not much I can do about the situation, The Fiancé’s usually kind enough to let me vent. Sometimes complaining about certain things to a confidant relieves enough stress to let me go on a little bit longer.

Assuming you don't want to do the same stuff that they do?

Hire or buy or steal a plastic smile and superglue it into place. There are always so many socialistes around... and they are the ones that climb too, becuase they are visible - but hey, whatever you do, don't complain. If necessary elbow back, and be nice to people who are 'higher up', but never compromise on what you are there for. And if your team doesn't like it? Let them lump it.

If you can't take it, punch a pillow. After a while - admittedly with soem hard work - I'm used to having people decide I'm a shrew / have a major thing about 'attitude'... but hey, I ahve never back-stabbed.

Yes, this kind of thing happens in my workplace, and for the most part I am an "active listener" but an "inactive sayer".

I listen, but I don't talk... I wait till I get home to do all my griping, that way I can't get myself into trouble.

But, other people do this to me, and it's frustrating, so I just nod my head and say "yeah", "nah", "really?" or "oh" every now and then (Hopefully in the right spots) and stand there with a suitably blank "looking interested, but really don't care" face on.

Incidentally, how do you activate word verification?
