Wow, the Mpemba effect. I did an experiment to prove it. Took a glass of cold water and hot water and placed them outside under identicaly environmental conditions and the warm water froze first. Of course I followed the articles advice and did not use identical water samples in all regards except temperature. The cold water had salt added.

Of course, warm water can freeze faster than cold water if you don't control your variables. Not surprising at all.

I mean really the article says "The fact that hot water freezes faster than cold has been known for many centuries." Isn't that just a little bit deceptive? Why are you pointing to such an article as being scientifically accurate?

The Mpemba effect sounds like it is all about not controlling ones variables, or just plain old bad experimental results.

I wonder if the Mpemba effect is what causes some cooks to think the opposite is true... that cold water will boil faster than hot. I can't think of anything counter-intuitive at the moment. I like the Betty Rubble vitamin note, RT. I tend to look for those kind of things in packages.

Remember the movie "Carrie" where she gets her period in the beginning and freaks out? Well, you probably know this, but in real life that wouldn't happen because the water from the shower would have kept her from flowing. I heard that somewhere.

Mmm... Well, I don't have any counter-intuitive facts, but I recently bought a book called A World of Imponderables that answers a lot of the really important questions... Like why is there no Betty Rumble character in the Flintstones Multivitamins, or why do paper bags have jagged edges, or even, how does the water keep from freezing in a water tower...

Do those count for anything? :o)
